After almost two years of planning, Matt, Iwan, Isaiah, Colin, and Nina brought their business to life. Their idea was simple: a brewery where every aspect was well-appointed and intentional. In other words, everything served a purpose. From the music, to the artwork and the lighting throughout the space, enjoying a pint at Whistle Buoy Brewing is all about the experience.

The team at Whistle Buoy Brewing possesses a unique skill set in the beer-making world. Think a harmonious combination of brewing expertise, sustainability, and hospitality. Taken together, these elements make for a truly unique brewery that is well on its way in Victoria. I had a chance to sit down with Isaiah, their Retail Manager, to learn more about Whistle Buoy and the why behind it all.

Building a sustainable business was always in the cards for the five founders of Whistle Buoy. With experience in the beer, retail, and hospitality industries, their know-how is on full-display when enjoying any of their core beers or rotating taps. Underlying all of their beers is the notion of conscious consumption; that is, consuming a product in-house that’s been brewed in-house.

Nestled in the lower courtyard of Market Square, their tasting room draws inspiration from a West Coast fishing expedition, and for good reason. The story behind Whistle Buoy was created while free-diving and spearfishing off the coast of Vancouver Island near Bamfield. A vivid experience solidified the brewery’s name while diving off a productive reef in those very waters. Fog began to settle in and their vision became severely limited. This particular reef was marked by a whistle buoy. Although they couldn’t see it, the sound of the whistle buoy made the group feel grounded and safe.

When it comes to their beer, Whistle Buoy sources all of their ingredients from Vancouver Island. This drastically reduces their ecological footprint, gives them more control over the finished product, and helps support local businesses all over the Island. Our favourites thus far have been their Fernwood Coffee Miled, a blonde ale featuring coffee from Fernwood Coffee Company, and their Gulagubben Scandinavian Ale, a crisp, refreshing beer perfect for any occasion.
